Obtaining a Social Security Card
Any student who will work in the U.S. must apply for a Social Security Number. The employer must use the SSN to report wages and taxes to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and Social Security Administration (SSA). F-1 students are eligible to apply for an SSN after they have received an offer of employment that meets SSA standards. Please see the tabs below to learn more about obtaining a social security card.
NOTE: In order to receive a social security card you must be hired on campus first.
Below is a list of everything you need to bring with you to the social security office and what to expect.

What to Expect
You could be waiting 10 minutes or 2+ hours, you never know how long it will take so make sure you go at a time that will not affect your classes, practices, or work schedule. Here are some other important things you should know:
- It is best to get there as close to 9:00am as possible. If you arrive early, there are likely to be less people ahead of you and you can hopefully get out faster.
- When you first arrive, make sure to get your number. There are machines to the left of the doors. You will state that the reason for your visit is to apply for a social security card (for the first time). Make sure you KEEP the number that is printed and listen for it to be called.
- You are not allowed to bring drinks or food into the office, so finish your Wildcat Mocha before you go in.
- You cannot answer any phone calls in the waiting room (you will need to step out to take a call). It may be best to let the call go to voicemail - you do not want to miss your number being called!
- If you do bring drinks/food or you answer a call, expect to be yelled at by the security guard.
- Make sure you have all of your paperwork and documents out and ready. You will need to have them unfolded, in a neat pile, to push them under the glass divider.
- Sometimes employees give students a hard time, if there is any problem with your paperwork, kindly ask them what you need to do differently and get a template is possible. You can always go back if necessary.
- It is also important to note that you will not get your card right away, it may take up to 4 weeks to be delivered.
Important Information For AFTER You Receive Your Card
As stated above, it can take 4+ weeks for your card to come in; be patient!
This is an extremely important piece of paper. You should not give your card number out to anyone but °®½´ÊÓƵ's Employee Engagement Office. Please read more about social security theft .
Most U.S. citizens memorize their card number so they do not have to bring it out. It should be kept in a safe place; NOT your wallet.
If you lose your card, you can order a replacement, but you can only do this 10 times so it is important to be careful with.
